The Whitsundays history began over 100 million years ago when huge volcanic activity created this sprawling island world. The islands were discovered by Captain James Cook when he first sailed through these magnificent islands in 1770. The islands were subsequently named after the day he sailed through them “Whit-Sunday”.

This network of seventy for unspoilt islands, many of which are uninhabited are yours to explore. The islands are sprinkled around an archipelago filled with abundant marine life, spectacular reefs and diamond white sandy beaches which wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. Beaches

Nature

Hawkesbury’s Sandstone National Park is a magical place to forget about city life and explore many bush walking trails. There are the complex and beautiful waterways of Broken Bay with exotic mangroves, winding creeks and washed sandstone cliffs. A must see on any Pittwater charter is Ku-ring-gai National Park where you’ll find some great little beaches and coves along with an abundance of Australian wildlife, flora and fauna as well as spectacular views where the Hawkesbury meets the sea. A favourite amongst the locals and tourists is the Penguin Colony on Lion Island. Lion Island Nature Reserve houses a large colony of Little Penguins, estimated at about 300 breeding pairs. This has been a joint project between National Parks and Wildlife and Taronga Zoo and has been underway since early 1990 to manage and monitor the colony. Be sure not to miss these adorable little animals.

For something different

HMAS Parramatta was a convoy escort ship in the 1940’s and was tragically torpedoed by a German U-559. Of the 138 unsuspecting crew only 24 are said to have survived. What remains of the wreck is on the Hawkesbury River off Milson Island and has a fascinating history and is a poignant stop on your trip.

Wattamolla beach is really worth seeking out, tucked behind the beach is a stunning lagoon.

Nature

If you’re looking for native Australian birds, flora and fauna then the Royal National Park is the place for you. The National Park is the second oldest National Park in the world.

The park was added to the Australian Natural Heritage List in December 2006 and rightly deserving the title of a Royal National Park. This sprawling, lush area is home to heathland, mudflats, rivers, inlets and rich rainforest habitats which many Australian wildlife and small birds call home.

During this period, the marina accommodated 24 megayachts that were as large as 230 feet. As this was a purpose built marina for the Olympics, the original plans lacked the basics for a fully functional marina. Now, over a decade after the world renowned event, the marina is in urgent need of an upgrade and causing arguments between council and Marina Management

Under the proposed $25 million developments, two two storey buildings will be built to provide facilities for management staff and crew. Brian James, the chairman of the Sydney Superyacht Marina pointed out “At the moment it does not even have a toilet, it has no showers and no anything. Although there is a café at the site, it is only open on occasions.”

As well as the two storey buildings, the proposal also includes shops, cafés and dormitory rooms so crews on the luxury yachts can have a place to sleep when their vessels are in port.

Unfortunately Leichhardt’s mayor Jaime Parker is not likened by the new development proposal as feelings of government ignorance has meant a lack of integration of developments. He also complained that the area was becoming more of an entertainment precinct than a working harbour.

“Are we wanting to turn this into a function center which is what’s proposed? How dos this relate to a working harbour?” – Jamie Parker

However Mr James fired back stating that the development was in keeping with a modern working harbour and the facilities would support a superyacht marina working ships chandlery, minor repair facilities and marina offices.

As one of Australia’s premier superyacht venues, Sydney is able to host around 45 superyachts each year, which is a market that is underdeveloped, and in its growth stages. Mr Tripodi, Sydney’s Waterway’s minister, has said that it is important for the development to be approved as it will secure the Sydney Superyacht market for the future and will guarantee renewed employment growth in the important maritime history.

With plans still waiting to be approved it is only hoped that something useful is to come out of the proposal. Having crew dormitories, new facilities, and an area for public entertaining could mean a wealth of new jobs and international Superyachting recognition, however with all bright lights around the proposal, could we miss the real reason and need for a newer devlopment?
